A coupla hundred sneaker nerds and hipsters crowded into Coolangatta-place-to-be Neverland on Friday night to check out an art show with a difference. Gold Coast boutique Sneak and Destroy has been open in Broadbeach for a few months now and to celebrate the success of the business they got in touch with shoe brands and local artists to come up with a coupla strictly limited edition one-off collabs. Nike, adidas and DVS were a few of the blanks sent out to the artists to have their way with, and results were varied and interesting.
From the amazingly graphic, vaginally-tongued Supras, through to Claudio Kirac’s rainbow Vans and Nick Chalmers’ unique and slick looking Stan Smith’s there was a wide range of approaches on display, and plenty to keep the crowd occupied.
Once the gawking was done punters got down to the serious business of getting drunk, a process that was superbly soundtracked by Kiss-perience, a full costume, full make-up tribute to the legendary, Paul Stanley fronted, rock superstars. The bass player may have only been his job thanks to his six-inch long tongue, and the band frequently blew the bar’s power supply, but Detroit Rock City, I Wanna Rock ’n Roll and all the rest were perfect. Sneakers, rock, booze and vaginas… the night was a rousing and raucous success.
